It’s the pangolin.
They are the only mammals that are fully covered in scales.
Those scales are just keratin (the same thing our nails are made of), yet they’re sold illegally for “medicine” and superstition.
That single fact is why pangolins top every global wildlife trafficking list.
In 14 years of being in the wild, we’ve never seen one in the jungle.
That’s how rare they’ve become.
The good news?
India has finally stepped up.
Pangolins are now Schedule 1 protected species, the same level as tigers, with stronger surveillance, anti-poaching units, and rescue networks trying to save what’s left.
The myths have pushed this tiny animal to the brink of extinction.
But still fighting, thanks to people working quietly behind the scenes.

![If you’ve ever seen a tiger curl its lips, stick out its tongue and hold a strange “funny face” for a few seconds… It isn’t being dramatic.
It performs the Flehmen response.
After picking up a scent on a tree or rock, the tiger closes its nostrils and holds that expression to send the smell to the Jacobson’s organ, a special sensory organ that tells it exactly what the scent means.
Is it a female in oestrus?
A rival male marking territory?
Or prey it can track?
In the forest, these tiny behaviours are powerful survival tools, and once you know what they mean, the jungle suddenly feels even more alive.

For centuries, communities have used this pigment to colour food, fabric, and even their skin.
